Now That You Have Been Reelected: Open Letter to Governor Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State

Congratulations on your victory in the just concluded Governorship elections . you certainly have a lot to celebrate about your victory this year. First of all let me congratulate you for winning the elections proper,. Like in D.O Fagunwa’s Ogboju Ode Ninu Igbo Irunmole, you were part of the seven brave men who set out to reach the Agodi Government House, and it has been a long gruelling journey over the past few months, but you have emerged as the last man standing. You went and you came back with your honour unimpaired. Accept my congratulations.

Second I want to congratulate you, as many other people must have done, as the jinx breaking governor. Your Excellency you have made history as the first Governor to  win a second term in office. It is a remarkable feat and it is one worthy of congratulations. It is said that the people of Oyo never allows an individual to serve them twice, and the fact that two of your  opponents in this year’s elections are former governors of the pace setter state. But you have managed to do it. I doff my hat for you

Finally I want to congratulate you for having aligned our great state, Oyo with the Government of President-elect Muhamadu Buhari and Yemi Osinbajo in Abuja. There is no doubt that the last four years have not been optimal for your government given that you have been in the opposition all the while. But know that those “dark days” are over, good times are here and you have made it happen, once again Your Excellency this is indeed worthy of celebration

Now that the congratulations are out of the way, I will start the next part of this letter by making one confession:  your Excellency,  I am a fan. I have been a fan ever since one of the very first town hall meetings you held at start of your first term at the Mapo Hall in Ibadan in 2011, where you declared that you would try your best to ensure good governance in Oyo State, and you wouldn’t care whether you win a second term or not, because Oyo State is nobody’s property. It is obvious that you have tried to govern well, given that the good people of Oyo state have handed over the resources of the state to you for another four years with their votes. I hope you do not let them down, I hope I my faith in you isn’t crushed as well.

Now that you have been reelected.  You have been given an opportunity that no one else , including  the great icon Chief Ajibola Ige has ever been given, you  now have eight years to pass with flying colours or fail woefully. You are luckier than everyone else. As you can see for yourself, the two occupants of the Agodi Government House before you are still struggling earnestly for the opportunity that has been presented to you. It is up to You to determine if you want to carve your name in stone or you want to go down in infamy like some of the ones before you. In case you have forgotten the price of failure, ask Rasheed Ladoja or Adebayo Alao-Akala or Teslim Folarin, they will tell you that the people of Oyo State have long memories and they do not forgive easily. With your win, you have even more people sceptical about what you can achieve in your second term, it is not their fault, we all know how second terms work in Nigeria. I hope you prove them wrong. I hope you find time to talk with your newly elected comrade in Lagos Akin Ambode, he would tell you the role that eight years of good work of Babatunde Raji Fashola played in his (Ambode) election. This is so that when you hand over in 2019 your good work will speak for the next candidate that your party presents for the governorship. This is not a time to become arrogant and authoritarian. There are still plenty of things you have to do to be mentioned in the same sentence as Babatunde Raji Fashola, but I believe in you. I can not reiterate this enough, you have broken a record, a jinx, do not make us the people of Oyo state regret putting our trust in you.

I am sure your table will be full of other congratulatory messages so I won’t  bother you  with too much much talk , but I would have to point out that there is no time to play the kind of “too many irons in the fire” administrative style, that characterized your first term, which led to many uncompleted projects. I will admit that this had made me sceptical about your government, but I appreciate your sentiment that you were trying set Oyo state back on the path of progress after many years of misrule, but the next four years is time to focus on completing projects one at a time, appointing the appropriate people to manage critical positions, not using state appointments to appease political allies. This is the only time you have left to get it right. I believe in you, the people of Oyo state believe in you. Long live the pace setter state, long live Nigeria…

Yours sincerely

A citizen of Oyo State
