So  you think you know Nigeria, here are 21 quick facts about Nigeria’s presidents from 1960 till date

(1.)Nigeria has had 14 presidents since her independence from the British in 1960

(2.)Aguiyi-Ironsi enlisted into the Nigerian Army on 2 February 1942 against the wishes of his sister

(3.)Contrary to popular Opinion, Goodluck Jonathan is not the first Southerner Vice President to come to power after the death of a ruling Northerner president. The honour belongs to Olusegun Obasanjo who succeeded General Murtala Mohammed after the latter was killed in a coup in 1976

(4.)By one count Olusegun Obasanjo is both the fifth Millitary President of Nigeria (1976-1979) and the 5th Civillian President of Nigeria (2003-2007)

(5.) Out of every president to have ruled Nigeria, only Ernest Shonekan (1993-1993) and Goodluck Jonathan (2010- date) do not either have northern affiliation or links to the Millitary

(6.)The Average age of the presidents of Nigeria is forty eight years
(7.)The Individual most likely to be Nigeria’s President is a 48 year old northerner who has had millitary training.
(8.)Nnamdi Akiziwe had a masters degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1933
(9.)Abdulsalam Abubakar is the only Millitary president who was older than 53 as at the time of becoming president(1998). Goodluck Jonathan is also the only Nigerian President who was younger than 54 as at the time he became  president (2010).

(14.)Nnamdi Azikiwe (died 1996) is the only dead Nigerian president to not have died while in power

(16.) the Gwari ethnic group, a minority ethnic group in Niger state has produced two of Nigeria’s presidents same as Yoruba the majority ethnic group on the South West and Igbo also the major ethnic group in the South East.

 (17.) if ethnicity  of Nigerian Presidents is determined by place of birth then Niger State (North Central) has produced more presidents than the whole of South East and South South combined (Nnamdi Azikiwe was born in Zungeru Niger State in 1904)
(18.) Major General JTU Aguyi- Ironsi was known as “Ironside” for his role in the Congo

(19.) Ernest Shonekan is the president with the shortest tenure (August to November1993). Incidentally Olusegun Obasanjo who has the longest tenure (combined) is also from the same state (Ogun) and the same city (Abeokuta) in South west Nigeria

(20.) The president with the longest tenure(unbroken) is Yakubu Gowon (1966-1975) but the president with the longest tenure (differnt years) is Olusegun Obasanjo (1976-1979) and (1999-2007)

(21.) the title of the Nigerian Head of State is Grand Commander of the Federal Republic (GCFR)

(22.) Among all presidents of Nigeria, only two: J.T.U Aguyi Inronsi who died in 1966 at the age of 42 and Murtala Mohammed who died in 1976 aged 38  did not live to see their 50th Birthday. and  Goodluck Jonathan is the only Nigerian President, living  who is currently younger than 60

  2. Hi Deebayuu. You did not approve my comment but that’s fine. All you need to do is make the correction to the post about Obasanjo. By count, Obasanjo isn’t the fifth military president but the FOURTH. Aguiyi-Ironsi, Gowon and Murtala Muhammed came before him making him number four.

    Also, he IS not the fifth civilian president by count. Azikiwe, Shagari, Shonekan also came before him making him number FOUR and not number five.
